This week’s free finds…

blogger 066

Gotta love the weekends…because folks do some cleaning and toss stuff out. On Sunday I found two  RUSTY metal cabinets. I haven’t ever cleaned anything that was this rusty. The P L A N . . . clean up the rust (do you sand it, if so, with what?), seal the remaining rust and spray paint white.  I am thinking that if all goes well, including getting the left door open on the double door cabinet…I will try to put it in my bedroom closet to replace the dresser that is in there. I have always wanted a cabinet in my tiny closet, as you can open the doors and see everything at once with out having to open each drawer…yes, I am lazy! I actually think it will make the two turns on my 1906 narrow stairway…unlike the other free find cabinet. By the way, I sold the other free find on Craigslist…the buyer lived just a few blocks away and was planning to paint it and use as a linen closet in a cabin…so perfect…make me happy!

I even like the lock on the cabinets.

blogger 070 This single unit will probably end up in the garage or basement. If it goes in the garage I may put some plastic bins in it and use to hold my recycling…that way I won’t have to look at all those goodies each time I get in my car.

People Who Know Me Would Say: said...

You know what I'd do? I'd take a photo of it and go down to the nearest auto repair shop. Ask how much they would charge to repaint it. It will be inexpensive and they know how to take care of the rust. I've done it with odd things in the past. :)

I can't wait to see what you do with it. I know it will awesome!

I'd rather go trash shopping than shop in a high-end department store anyday. If the auto place is too expensive I just use a small sander to get some of this rust off and then spray with rustoleum paint. I like what you're gonna use them for, be perfect for sweaters. Hugs, Rosemarie

I did the same thing but they ended up in my small store the rusty cupboard. Have fun.

Love that rusty ole cabinet. I'm with Rosemarie, I'd rather go to nickel & dime stores anyday of the week than any mall in the world. I love the flea markets, yard sales, antique shops with a gazillion little shops in them and so on. Great find.

Rustoleum might work, it seals the rust. I know they have an automotive paint that does it, but not sure where to get it (other than an auto body place). I would sand it down with steel wool and then protect it with rustoleum paint, because it will keep it from rusting and the sanding will help to keep it from bleeding through the paint. Great finds!

I think they make rust remover for your wonderful freebies. I know that painting with Rustoleum will keep it from coming back.

Have a Marvelous Monday

THESE ARE FANTASTIC!!! I just read PJs post and my neighbor does the exact same thing! For us, we've sanded, cleaned and then painted with a rustoleum type paint that covers rust but I don't know if it "stops" rust.
I can't wait to see what you do with this gem.
You made me think of something I have that I think many would appreciate (you too!). I've an old set of metal school lockers and they are so wonderful!

You know, you could leave the outside as is and just paint the inside...just a thought. I love rust though - that's just me! Nice post! Andrea
