See the kitchen while it is clean...

I am tired and it's late so all I have to share is pics of a clean kitchen. When I bought my 1906 house in 2002 it had the typical 'one person' original kitchen...the one that some unbelieveable mother of a brood of kids made wonderful meals. The kinda small kitchen that you can reach all the appliances just by spinning in a circle...no steps necessary....one that is smaller than the dining room. Does anyone know why it was back then that the kitchen was smaller than the dining room? My guess is that the wife/mother did all the cooking so you only needed room for one...but there were many mouths to feed...so you needed a dining room large enough for the family to sit and enjoy their meal.

The first day I moved in construction began to add 10' x 24' to the back of house to accomodate a nice size kitchen and a screen porch. The work took about 4-5 months. I used the 3rd floor of my house (the finished attic space) as my primary living room as the first floor was full of dust. Bought a microwave, small fridge and put them on the 3rd floor. Fortunately I was traveling 4 days a week for work so I didn't have to eat too many meals at home. I could write a book on all that I learned with regards to managing a contractor, designing the space, selecting products and living at home during the process.

Maybe tomorrow I will show you a close up of the picture on top of the stove...it is me doing something that I will probably only do once in a lifetime.

Thanks for stopping by...

I love it. I think this is what I have been trying to describe to Bob for years but couldn't help him "see" it. I can't wait to show him your post!

Your kitchen is beautiful! Our 1925 home also has a very small kitchen. And doors were removed before we bought it. Why did they want to be all closed up in the kitchen? Now the open feeling is popular. It's so funny how things change.

First a confession... I lifted your photos to show to my hubby. We are going to paint our kitchen cabinets and I was trying to explain to him how I wanted to cut out the middle of the cabinets and replace it with beadboard. Now he can see what I want. I want a black and white kitchen too and your beautiful one is quite an inspiration. Thank you so much.
