Privacy metamorphosis…

Love my neighborhood, however, my home is located off an alley and kitty corner from an apartment building…so I wanted some privacy. A while back I found 4 shabby, white shutters that each measured 20” by 60”. Immediately thought they could be hinged together and placed or hung from the ‘alley’ side of my front porch for privacy! I measured the area I wanted to cover and it measured 82” X 60”…so all four shutters would fit.

Now before you look closely at the shutters…remember that I have 1906 house and nothing is L E V E L! It was a tough time trying get the shutters to look somewhat level at the top and the bottom. And yes, I know there is dirt on the fan…I do clean it monthly but it isn’t often enough.

Now that you have seen the before and after, time to let you know I don’t like the look. The shutters gave me too much privacy and blocked too much sun. So sometime this week I will be selecting 3 of them and plan to hang them vertically horizontally. In the meantime, I spray painted the backside of each shutter as the backside shows publically. Hopefully by next Monday I will have them re-hung…so stop back.

  1. I love the shutters, but I think you're right they do seem to really make your porch feel closed off. Can't wait to see them hung vertically.

  7. What a great idea! I'm sorry you have to redo them, but I think they'll look good hung vertically, and give you just enough privacy. Can't wait to see the redo!

  11. Love the shutter idea and you were so fortunate to find the shutters and give them a second life.

They look great on your porch, almost like they've always been there. Good job!

  12. You have the sweetest little porch. I probably would have gone for the privacy, as I like the intimate, cozy setting. But then again, light on a porch is very important. I like the look either way. Such a wonderful old house you have!

  21. They do what they are supposed to do, but you are right, they block too much light and make the airy porch feel like a closed in room. Can't wait to see the re-do. Good luck and I'll be back to see.

  23. I love your porch. It feels like a nice place to hang out on. What a great idea to hang shutters for more privacy. I like the shutters just the way you have them. To bad there wasn't away you could have then open a tad bit for your liking. You were saying it gave you to much privacy. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

  24. I had the same problem. We built a trellis I guess you would call it and I have a vine planted that hopefully will climb all over it one day. You can see a little bit of it here. http://shaunahowington.blogspot.com/2009/07/i-love-look-of-front-porch-with-rocking.html
I love the shutter idea too!
